GARTER SPRINGS

Garter Springs, or Band Springs as they are sometimes known, are a coiled length of tension spring with some kind of end fixing that enables you to join the ends together to make a continuous ring. This enables the garter spring to function as a compressive ring around shafts wheels or pulleys.

Garter springs are seen in a number of applications but the most is in oil seals or as drive belts.

There are various different end forms that can be used in order to make the ring connection. The simplest of course is to use a hook and eye but this is not so secure. One other possibility is to taper one end of the Garter Spring to enable you to screw it into the other, sometimes known as a rat-tail end design. However the most secure and commonly used way is to use an insert which is screwed into both ends to form the loop. This insert is essentially a short close coiled length that fits tightly within the inside diameter of the close coiled band tension spring to ensure a tight and positive fixing.
